James Corden + Ruth Jones on Jonathan Ross

This is another historic post. Corden and Jones were on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, November 2, 2007.

The comedic duo followed celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey and had a good 10 or so minute chat with Ross. The visit coincided with the release of Gavin & Stacey series 1 on DVD (October 29, 2007) and the guests did their best to promote their show during the interview.

Since Series 2 of Gavin & Stacey is set to premiere later this month on BBC (see post, “Mark Your Calendars:“), I think it makes sense to revisit this interview.

Read all the details after the jump.

Corden and Jones kicked off the interview with how they’d met on the set of Fat Friends. It was during Fat Friends that Corden first had the idea for Gavin & Stacey and the two began talking about how they could bring it to life.

Ross asked if there was any sexual chemistry between the two, which led into a discussion about their relationship. Both described it as a love/hate, brother/sister kind of thing. In fact, they wrote a kiss between Nessa and Smithy into the pilot of Gavin & Stacey, but when it came to it, they couldn’t follow it through. Jones did point out that the two agreed on plenty of things - including the importance of lunch.

During the interview, it was also revealed that Sheridan Smith will play Smithy’s sister in Series 2. Which prompted Ross to ask about James and Sheridan’s relationship. Coyly, Corden reveled that she was in the audience and that he was avoiding talking about her so that he didn’t monopolize the interview with his professions of love. After some goading by Ross, Corden did an imitation of Tom Cruise on Oprah and jumped up on the couch and danced to show Smith how much he cares for her.

That brought the interview to perhaps the funniest story of the night - about how Corden likes to wind Jones up. UK residents can see this part of the interview on YouTube: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq_aQNH8FBY

Finally, Ross showed a clip of Corden dancing during the stag-party (at about the 1:5o mark in this clip) in Series 1, Episode 5 of Gavin & Stacey. In it, Corden does some pretty fancy footwork, including a move he calls the “Dolphin.” Others might remember it by it’s less-kind name, “The Worm.” Corden revealed that Smith often teases him for dancing like a girl, which he thinks is fine because men dance like “rubbish” usually. He also let on that he is a big fan of British boy-band Take That and since the group has an opening…

Corden and Jones also talked about a US-version of Gavin & Stacey. NBC has purchased the rights and Corden and Jones will serve as executive producers. No word yet on any development, casting or timing, although it sounded like it’s scheduled for some time in 2008. Hopefully it can achieve the kind of across-the-pond success that the import of The Office has had. Stay tuned for more details.
